The Chilean national team has delivered an impressive performance at the 2nd World Chovgan Championship in Baku, earning a place among the tournament’s leading contenders and demonstrating the growing international reach of the sport.

Held from 7–13 June, the prestigious tournament has brought together national teams from different countries, reflecting the increasing global popularity of Chovgan, a traditional equestrian sport with deep historical roots.

Chile began its campaign with a highly competitive match against Azerbaijan, ending in a hard-fought 0–0 draw. Although neither side found the net, the encounter was marked by intensity, determination and impressive performances from both teams. The following day, the Chilean team secured a convincing 3–0 victory over Kuwait, strengthening its position in the tournament and advancing to the next stage.

The Head of Mission of Chile in Azerbaijan, Juan C. Salazar, attended the matches to support Team Chile, led by captain Eduardo Hechem, and to encourage the players throughout the competition.

The Chilean side also expressed its gratitude to Bahruz Nabiyev, President of the International Chovgan Federation, for his commitment to promoting Chovgan internationally and strengthening the sport’s global presence.

Speaking to local media, Chilean team captain Eduardo Hechem emphasized the promising future of Chovgan and its growing popularity around the world.

“Chovgan has a bright future,” Hechem said. “The sport is developing rapidly in Asia and Africa and is gradually gaining popularity in other parts of the world. Beyond the competition itself, there is a unique atmosphere of friendship, mutual respect and camaraderie among the teams, which will help accelerate the growth of the sport.”

Hechem also praised the organization of the championship in Azerbaijan.

“Everything has been organized at a very high level. We received an exceptionally warm welcome, and the hospitality of both the organizers and the Azerbaijani people has exceeded our expectations,” he noted.

For the Chilean team, participation in the World Chovgan Championship marks its first experience competing in Chovgan at this level. According to Hechem, the players have spent many years playing together in Chile, primarily in polo, and their strong teamwork has helped them adapt successfully to the sport.

Commenting on the tournament favorites, the Chilean captain described Azerbaijan as the strongest contender for the title, citing the team’s experience, familiarity with their horses and the advantage of competing on home ground.

Chile will now look ahead to the semi-finals and finals of the championship, while the tournament continues to showcase the growing international appeal and bright future of Chovgan.
